The whole world is going to celebrate ‘International Yoga Day 2022’ on 21st June. India has already had a very rich tradition of yoga and has been taking advantage of it by using it as a medical method, but now medical science is also considering yoga therapy as iron. A research study has been done by Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) regarding Yoga Nidra, in which it has been found to be very effective for patients. Yoga Nidra has been scientifically proven to be effective in this randomized controlled trial lasting 4 years on 60 patients.
Dr. Karuna Dutta, author of this research published in The National Medical Journal of India and Dr. Manjari Tripathi, Professor, Center of Excellence, AIIMS, states that Yoga Nidra is very beneficial for patients suffering from chronic insomnia. has been found to be beneficial. Yoga Nidra has been used by saints and sages for sleep since ancient times in India, but no special study was done on scientific basis regarding how useful it is in insomnia, but now it has been done in AIIMS. Gaya This study cum test confirms that yoga nidra can benefit people suffering from insomnia to a great extent.
First of all, know what is insomnia disease
. Dr. Manjari says that if the patient is not able to sleep properly for 3 months or more than 3 months, 3 days a week, then it is called chronic insomnia or insomnia disease. Such patients have such a problem of sleep that they have to take sleeping pills given by the doctors. The patient also gets addicted to these medicines. These medicines also have disadvantages. This is the reason that for a long time the need of such things is being felt which can help in bringing back the sleep of the patient without medicines.
What is yoga nidra
Dr. Manjari says that Indian culture already has such methods and medical methods which are suitable for the diagnosis of diseases. Yoga is one of these methods. Yoga Nidra is a method in Yoga itself. This sleep is not a state of complete sleep, but it is a process or method of yoga, which has to be done daily in the morning on an empty stomach for some time. It has five stages or steps. The shavasana that comes in yogasanas is a part of this.
What did the experts of Delhi AIIMS do?
Professor Manjari says that to see the effect of yoga nidra in insomnia, a study was done for 4 years from 2012 to 2016. During this, it was decided to give yoga nidra training to insomniac patients who came for treatment at AIIMS. Before this training, sleep study of the patients was done. In this, it was seen that what activities are happening in the brain of the patients, what is the condition of their breathing, all this was checked. During this, it came to light that these patients were not able to sleep at night.
60 patients included in the trial
The research team of AIIMS included a total of 60 patients suffering from insomnia for this. All these patients were divided into two parts. One team of 30 people was given Yoga Nidra training along with conventional treatment i.e. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI), while half of the people i.e. another team of 30 patients was given only conventional treatment i.e. CBTI with simulated yoga. CBTI) was given only. For four years, the sleep study of both these groups was done once again. Microscopically by using machines, the patients’ brain activity, how many hours they slept, how many hours they woke up, how many times they woke up, all these things were again noted in the diary.
Here came the result of the research
Dr. Manjari says that very interesting results came out after giving Yoga Nidra. The group of patients who were given Yoga Nidra showed a lot of improvement in their sleep. His total sleep time had increased. The sleeping capacity had increased. There was a decrease in the activity of getting up or waking up repeatedly after sleeping, there was improvement in the condition of staying awake till late at night, the quality of sleep increased, yoga nidra made a lot of difference in these patients. During insomnia, it was seen that patients had headache, confusion and irritability due to lack of sleep. After yoga nidra, not only in sleep but also in reaching the rest of the brain, better effect was seen on all these things.
We have free treatment, why don’t you use it?
Dr. Manjari says that we have such a good treatment for insomnia in yoga therapy, for which we do not have to spend money, do not have to run to the doctor again and again, and do not have to do any special effort. Rather keep doing this process of yoga on your own, then those who have insomnia can be cured. Whereas psychologists are needed for the traditional treatment of insomnia i.e. CBTI, whose number is already very less in India. Apart from this, there are 10 to 12 sessions for therapy and the cost of one session is in thousands, which is very expensive. This treatment is not available even in rural areas, but once you learn it, you can do yoga nidra anytime and anywhere, and it is more effective as well.
